This particular finial is sculpted from spruce timber and has been fully pressure treated to help protect against rot. Called the ‘bishop’, it’s design is both eye catching and stylish. It is perfectly suitable for painting, using a fence treatment if required to match the color of your panels and posts. It comes supplied with the square post cap to sit under the finial itself as well as a double ended screw to secure together.
The Bishop continues to be a popular design in our range of wooden post toppers. We also stock acorn and ball designs as well as pyramid and flat post caps. We can supply both treated and untreated versions, as well as metal. See our products page (see the link on the top bar) to view our full range, all of which is available to be shipped to many UK addresses.
Installation and maintenance
When installing the finials it is also advisable to pre-dril the caps before screwing them down to help prevent the timber from splitting. This is especially the case in hot weather, when the wood can harden and is more prone to splitting. The double ended screw supplied will fix the post cap onto the finial. Normal screws will be required to secure the square cap down onto the top of the fence post. (Not supplied with the finial).
As with all timber, over time the wood will begin to weather in the elements and turn silver/grey. This is perfectly normal. It is a good idea to purchase some fence paint and treat the wood. Ideally this should be done every year or 2 as required to help prevent the timber from rotting over a period of years. Although the timber is pressure treated, over time the elements can penetrate this layer of treatment. Correct maintenance of your garden fence is very important to keep the wood in top condition.
